Happy 15th Birthday .NET!

Today marks the 15th anniversary since .NET debuted to the world. On February 13th, 2002, the first version of .NET was released as part of Visual Studio.NET. It seems just like yesterday when Microsoft was building its “Next Generation Windows Services” and unleashed a new level of productivity with Visual Studio.NET. Since the beginning, the .NET platform has allowed developers to quickly build and deploy robust applications, starting with Windows desktop and web server applications in 2002. You got an entire managed framework for building distributed Windows applications, ASP.NET was…

It’s a Good Day to Be a C# Developer

Recently at Connect(), Microsoft made a slew of new announcements. First, the public availability of Visual Studio 2017 Release Candidate. This just isn’t a new version of the signature developer tool, it also includes the latest bits for C# 7.0. Second, Google announced they were joining the .NET Foundation. This means that Google, technically a competitor of Microsoft, wants to be actively involved in the evolution of .NET (and indirectly C#). Third, the first public release of Visual Studio for Mac. As a native environment, Visual Studio for Mac will…

Android required permissions

In Visual Studio 2015 if you checked same permissions on your project properties and when reopen it, your checks are disappeared, you have two ways: Is the manifest file marked as ‘read only’ in Windows Explorer? You have to select the Properties directory and un-tick ‘read only’ for the entire folder. Add manually in AndroidManifest.xml file same new rows: <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”utf-8″?> <manifest xmlns:android=”https://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android”> <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion=”15″ /> <application android:label=”$safename$”> <meta-data android:name=”com.google.android.maps.v2.API_KEY” android:value=”yourcode” /> </application> <uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.INTERNET” /> <uses-permission android:name=”com.google.android.providers.gsf.permission.READ_GSERVICES” /> <uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE” /> <uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION” /> <uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION” /> <uses-permission…

C# 7 Features Previewed

Over the last year we’ve shown you various features that were being considered for C# 7. With the preview of Visual Studio 15, Microsoft has decided to demonstrate the features to make it into the final release of C# 7. Tuple Value Types .NET has a tuple type, but in the context of C# there are a lot of problems. Being a reference type, you probably want to avoid using it in performance sensitive code as you have to pay for GC costs. And as they are immutable, while making…

Customize Json result in Web API

If you work with Visual Studio 2015 and WebAPI, this short post is for you! We have to make our Web API project easy to debug so, I’m going to remove the XML formatter. I’m doing that because I’m in a test project and I’d like to see the response in the browser. The easily way to force the response to Json for all Web API requests is to remove the XML. Obviously you shouldn’t do it in production. Global.asax var formatters = GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.Formatters; formatters.Remove(formatters.XmlFormatter); Now we can start change…

Creating a URL shortener using ASP.NET WepAPI and MVC

In this tutorial, I use several techniques and tools. I use Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 and the latest version of all components. ASP.NET MVC: Microsoft’s modern web application framework. As the name says, it pushes you to use the MVC (model view controller) software design principle. ASP.NET Web API: Web API and MVC are used together in many applications. With MVC, the HTML of the web pages are rendered on the server, and with Web API you can, like the name says, create an API. Web API also uses the…

Web.config: encryption and decryption

Introduction In this article I will explain how to encrypt or decrypt connection Strings in web.config file using asp.net. Description In Previous posts I explained lot of articles regarding Asp.net, Gridview, SQL Server, Ajax, JavaScript etc. In many of articles I used connection Strings section in web.config file to store database connection. The connection Strings section contains sensitive information of database connections including username and password of database. Is it secured to store the sensitive information of database connections in plain text files called web.config and machine.config files? If we…

Introducing ASP.NET 5

The first preview release of ASP.NET 1.0 came out almost 15 years ago.  Since then millions of developers have used it to build and run great web applications, and over the years we have added and evolved many, many capabilities to it.  I’m excited today to post about a new release of ASP.NET that we are working on that we are calling ASP.NET 5.  This new release is one of the most significant architectural updates we’ve done to ASP.NET.  As part of this release we are making ASP.NET leaner, more…

CoreCLR is now Open Source

To learn how .NET Core differs from the .NET Framework, take a look at the Introducing .NET Core blog post. You can check out the…

C# Extension Method

An extension method has simplified calling syntax. It represents static methods as instance methods. An extension method uses the this-keyword in its parameter list. It must be located in a static class. Example First, here is a custom extension method defined in a program written in the C# language. Generally, you will want to store your extension method class in a separate source file, such as “ExtensionMethods.cs” in your project. Note:This file should store a static class with public static extension methods. Then: In the rest of your source code,…

Getting error “The ‘Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0’ provider is not registered on the local machine”

While I was trying to connect to an Access Database from Visual Studio 2010 on my Windows 7 x64 server, I got the following error message, SOLUTION After a detailed research on the above error message, I was able to identify that the 64-bit framework dlls weren’t able to 32-bit versions of the ‘Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0‘ provider modules. Since I was running Visual Studio on a 64-bit machine, IIS 7 is not (by default) serving 32-bit applications. However, I noticed that the database engine operated on 32-bit. I followed these steps to…

Five documentation apps for .NET developers

Documentation is a necessary evil for software developers. While C# and VB.NET have basic facilities for commenting code and embedding XML documentation into code, turning that into a more useful form is outside the realm of Visual Studio. These five applications can help you turn your comments and notes into proper documentation.   1: Sandcastle Sandcastle is probably one of the best known documentation generators for .NET, and it has the benefit of being open source. Unfortunately, Sandcastle is difficult to use on its own, prompting a small cottage industry…
